Hi -

You might be interested in knowing (or perhaps not), that there are some herbal options for varicose veins; I've been taking a product called theravein for a while and haven't suffered any problems since I started. One of the ingredients, Horse Chestnut has several pubmed entries on usage for varisose veins. The other components, gota kula, and butchers broom (maybe one other one) have long term use as 'local' remedies for a particular varicose vein problem you don't normally see on the leg, if you know what I mean.

OK!

You could create designs for these, and sell them on CafePress.

My favorite existing bumpersticker (we display 2 of them) is this one, created and sold by The Raventones, a half-autistic 2-person rock band that gave a concert at Autreat 2006 (along with a workshop about the intentional autistic-friendly community they live in).

"Freedoms just another word for nothin left to lose,
And nothin aint worth nothin but its free,"

I might think I am free but I still have to obey the laws of physics :)

There are a lot of things said about freedom, for instance "with freedom comes responsibility"

If one choses ones own fate, which is the origanal meaning of "free doom" one has to take responsibility for it.

I make many moral choices, and in doing so I am maybe not free as I constrain myself, but in the end I can only do what I can, with what I have got.

That being said, I am not free to make the best of that (in the academic world for instance) because there are so many conventional barriers that have to be overcome, which one cannot do on ones own entirely.

I loved the movie, too.

Just wanted to note that there's a fight scene in a night club that has a lot of strobe lighting in it, and so anyone with a seizure disorder would be well advised to keep their eyes closed throughout. I wish I could remember what precedes it.

Nice post. The one qualm I had with it is

...Psychological freedom means to be able to think for yourself and not have anyone influence how you think. ...

I think we are all influenced by others. If this was not so, advertising would never work. We just need to recognize the difference between "being influenced" and "being coerced".

Dear Jason,
I loved your writing about your mother. I have a 17-year old daughter who attends Cook Academy, a special education school in SoHo. She has a learning disability and other issues. I actually work with your brother, Eric who told me about your blog. My daughters and I love Bronx Zoo. I heard from Eric that you love that place, too and that you are a member. I am a member as well and take my daughters there quite often. Hope to meet you in person one of these days at the zoo. Regards,

The celebrities were all wondering why I didn’t drink alcohol there at all, and I replied to anyone who spoke to me “Sorry, I don’t drink.” And they all looked at me.

Oh, wow, so it's not just in party-hardy college towns that people have this inexplicable reaction. I've never quite understood it. Not wanting to eat meat is perfectly fine, yet one is looked at as if one has three heads if one mentions not liking alcoholic drinks... As Jim Morrison once said, people are strange. :-p

Hi, Jason.

I read this yesterday:
...The problem lies with parents. ...

and decided to wait until today to respond, so I didn't come back with some snarky answer about over generalizing on your part. So I'll just politely ask today,

Please elaborate. My take on reading this sentence (if I understand you correctly) is that you feel that the primary reason autistics have problems functioning independently in society is their parents. While as a parent I can see potential problems with some of my own parenting (any experienced parent will admit that parenting is a process where we continually strive towards an ideal, and often fail) as well as some big problems with other's parenting, I guess I don't see the parents of autistics as the primary source of problems for autistics, but rather general societal prejudices and systems that are set up.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

First of all, in regards to licensing, be careful what you wish for.

Licensing would not be national (neither physicians or nurses have national licenses, neither would U/S technologists). I voted NO on your poll, and here are a couple of other reasons why:

1) Having a recognized society or board that sets training and competency standards, and then tests and credentials people, serves many of the same functions as licensing. It usually leads to better compensation for those who have passed the test, as well as serving to uphold uniform standards of quality and training.

2) Licensure boards do some good things, but they are bureaucracies, and become bogged down over time, valuing process and certain benchmarks (like number of hours of continuing education) over regulating any sort of quality. Also, as U/S is evolving, state bureaucracies tend to react slower than the various field's own organizations. And don't forget the money that would be involved in getting your license every year (multiplied by the number of states that you wanted to keep an active license in).

Now, in terms of quality vs. quality, you are absolutely correct. The doctors reading the scans get to know who consistently is able to get the best scans, and who isn't. Your reputation rests much more on your quality, than how many scans you can churn out in a day. The technology of the scanners is getting much better, but a quality technologist is still key to getting all the information out of a scan that you can.

I encourage you to visit http://www.neoteny.org/?cat=7. It is an autistic empowering theory of human evolution that hypothesizes an origin of autism.

Yeah, sure it is. For you. Tell that to the children with autistic disorder that have to be treated at tertiary care clinics for their self injurious behavior. Or tell it to the autistic adults living in residential/autistic care, including the middle aged woman in New York who was unable to tell the world that she was being repeatedly assaulted by staff. Or those who go missing from family homes, some turning up safe and healthy some not.

Good luck with your web site and your many blessings.
