The purpose of my site is to express myself, but more importantly to provide a platform to educate NT’s about Autism. I was very excited and intrigued when I received an email about the web series “True Champions: Asperger’s Syndrome (AS), Shonda Schilling, a true champion, cares for her son who is diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome.”
This series provides a very good perspective from a mother of a boy with Asperger Syndrome, Grant Schilling. Grant’s mother, Shonda, is also the wife of legendary baseball star Curt Schilling. The series of 4 videos focuses on the family’s experiences with Grant. It is separated into 4 parts: What is Asperger Syndrome, Managing Asperger Syndrome, Behind Closed Doors, and Asperger Syndrome Awareness. In the first part, Shonda describes in detail what her son’s Aspergers is like and compares it to others. In Part 2, Shonda details further what worked for her when managing her son Grant, but in Part 3, Shonda decribes the difficulty her husband Curt struggles to build a relationship with his son at first. Later on, Curt as well as his wife embrace their son’s unique intricacies and form a better relationship with their son. Shonda summarizes in part 4 about how awareness of Asperger Syndrome is just the beginning. She tells of the need of more than just awareness, but of understanding and a great need to treat children with Aspergers sooner.
My hope is that this video helps people understand even more what many people on the Autism Spectrum go through. In a lot of ways my own experiences growing up were similar because I also didn’t understand how to relate to my brothers and father too. It inspired me to realize how to form a true relationship with people like my family by getting what I need from my family in order to succeed in the world. I have learned a little more about myself because it is so important to be true to yourself guiding your way through life. Each and every one of us needs to be who we are and not be what any one else says we should be no matter who that person may be in your life. I hope you all enjoy the series as much as I did and listen to another perspective.
